Early Christmas present for charities
Two local charities received an early Christmas gift this week, thanks to a donation from CrownGate Shopping Centre.
Murray’s Muscles and Droitwich Salvation Army each received a cheque for £125 from CrownGate centre manager Erica Burlace, who said she was delighted to support such worthy local causes.
The charities were chosen by Charlie Green, Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist and star of this year’s CrownGate Christmas lights switch-on, who said the both charities were especially close to his heart.
Murray’s Muscles is a Droitwich-based charity, set up by Mark and Jane Field and named after their son Murray, who has muscle-wasting condition Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Since Murray, a school friend of Charlie Green, was diagnosed with the disease in 2005, the charity has been working hard to raise as much money and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign as possible.
Mark Field, of Murray’s Muscles said: “There is currently no cure or treatment for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, but with every penny that people donate to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, the chance and the hope of changing this situation becomes closer – so we are delighted to receive this donation.”
The second £125 donation has come as welcome news to Droitwich Salvation Army, based in Droitwich Christian Church, which is approaching one of its busiest times of the year.
The charity, which hosts a range of groups for the community including pre-school and toddler sessions to choirs and a children’s band, is currently organising its Christmas parcel campaign, whereby parcels of gifts donated by the public are distributed to those in need around the county.
Salvation Army Captain Jenny Forman explained: “Christmas is an especially important time for us and we make it our aim to help the people who really need it – however, there are some who don’t want to admit that they need help. We want these people to know that we are here to offer a range of services, from community groups to help and support.”
Erica Burlace, CrownGate centre manager, said: “We are delighted to be able to donate to these excellent local charities this Christmas.
“At this time of year, we are all reminded of what is really important to us all, and we hope that this donation will help with all the valuable work that these charities are carrying out.”
