Sports stars and Mayor boost rowers' spirits
The University of Worcester Rowing Club is pushing on with its amazing world record attempt in CrownGate, as team coach John Maxwell explains in his latest update:
"As dusk falls and the temperature drops, spirits are at a high after visits from the Mayor and two Warriors – Earl Collins and Andy Short. The women's team are less than 100km away from setting the first of the three World Records that we are attempting, and the men's team are keeping moving ahead of world record pace with each minute rowed.
"After a long, hard morning's work, the positive energy that the Mayor brought with him lifted all present, driving the rowers onwards and helping quicken the pace, and it was lovely to see him at the event. Likewise, the presence of Earl Collins and Andy Short was a welcome distraction from the monotony of the rowing – culminating in an exhilarating 100m challenge on the rowing machine. Organiser John Maxwell took the early lead, only to be pipped by 0.1 of a second by Andy Short. Any other Warriors, Wolves, Worcester FC players or Worcestershire Cricketers who fancy trying their hand against a rower – you know where to find us.
"The Women's World Record for 1 Million Metres should be broken at around 11pm today – we anticipate that our club president, Fay Sheppard, will be rowing at the time. The men's team is now nearly 100km ahead of the world record pace – a phenomenal achievement with less than 4 days rowed so far.
"Special mention should go to Rhys Paul – who has been blasting away at the top of the order. The distance that each rower travels during their hour long stint is recorded, and Rhys currently holds 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th furthest efforts! Phenomenal."
