Crowngate Shopping Centre have been a proud supporter of the Worcester Festival for many years and this year was no exception. Sponsored events including the Percy Colouring competition, Family Prize Quiz Trail and finally the Crowngate Percy Trail. Percy the Peacock’s cheeky face was placed in the windows of 20 shops in Crowngate and all competition winners had to do was find all 20 locations to be in with a chance of winning a refurbished second-hand adult or children’s bicycle kindly donated by Bike Worcester.
Working in partnership with Crowngate, Bike Worcester are situated in a former vacant unit in Friary walk. Volunteers are refurbishing bikes and making them available to people who might otherwise struggle to afford a new bike and don’t have the knowledge to fix up an old bike.
Recipients of bikes have included refugees, parents who want to accompany their children to school and others who just need a bike. All recipients are living in Worcester with one exception. One of the refurbished bikes was taken back to the Ukraine by a refugee family.
The lucky winner Kiera said: “It was a pleasure to have the opportunity of receiving a refurbished bike from Bike Worcester and Crowngate, Thank you both. A fun activity of finding peacocks with my son has led to an exciting gift for a cycling fanatic family member of mine. Cycling is great for many reasons, your health, the environment and just the sheer pleasure of the wind through your hair on a warm day (My personal favourite). Bike Worcester I must say is a fabulous idea, not just recycling bikes and making them accessible for all but they also run projects and events all in the name of cycling together!”
